In the global scene, United States President Donald Trump lost 326,118 followers on Thursday and later gained 5,339 followers on Friday.

Some of the world's biggest celebrities have lost millions of Twitter followers after the company cracked down on "locked" accounts.

Singer Katy Perry, whose account is the most-followed on Twitter, lost 1.5 million followers, dropping 1.4 percent to 108.1 million followers, Variety disclosed.

Twitter's top executive didn't slide by unscathed in the social-media site's crackdown on fake followers.

A Twitter spokesperson told Newsweek the platform will see a drop in around six percent of followers in the coming days.

Also, the accounts that Twitter would be purging are locked accounts that the company "detected sudden changes in account behaviour", and the owners didn't validate their accounts.

While eliminating locked accounts from follower totals will not affect MAU or DAU totals, Twitter's efforts to shut down other kinds of accounts - including those set up by spammers - potentially could, Gadde acknowledged.

"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate", said Twitter in a blog. He lost just 326,118 followers on Thursday, the day before most accounts saw a drop, and on Friday he regained 5,339 followers.

The most-followed account on Twitter belongs to popular singer Katy Perry, who lost 1.5 million followers; the number now stands at 108.1 million.

"People having an artificially-inflated follower count made up of bots and redundant accounts is at best deceiving and at worst, fraud".

A Twitter audit carried out in March 2018 by Twiplomacy, a platform that assists organisations and governments to improve their digital strategy, claimed that more than 50% of followers of profiles of major leaders, including that of Modi, are likely to be fake.

Fast forward to this week, when Twitter began purging fake accounts in an attempt to rid itself of some of its more unsavory qualities - trolling, spam, etc. - and make its metrics a little more realistic.

While BJP President Amit Shah was left poorer by 33,363 followers, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has lost 91,555 followers. The politicians now have 101 million and 53.1 million followers, respectively.

The average user was told to expect a drop of four or fewer followers, but warned others would "experience a more significant drop".
