Germany charges Iranian diplomat detained in bomb plot

"I would say there might be an escalation between us and the Iranians", Trump said at a news conference in Brussels.

In May, the United States pulled out of a multinational deal that lifted many sanctions against Iran in return for curbs to its nuclear program. Washington's reinstating of economic penalties has worsened Iran's already-hobbled economy.

"The allegation by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are baseless, preposterous and part of a targeted propaganda campaign and psychological warfare against the activities of the Iranian embassies overseas", Qasemi was quoted as saying. Washington has since told countries they must halt all imports of Iranian oil from November 4 or face USA financial measures, with no exemptions.

Pompeo appended a map claiming that Iran had at least indirect involvement in at least 11 terrorist attacks in Europe since 1979.

"Iran continues to send weapons across the Middle East, in blatant violation of UN Security Council resolutions", he said during talks in Brussels. He said the sanctions are not aimed at the Iranian people, but at "convincing the Iranian regime that its malign behavior is unacceptable and has a real high cost for them". "It's our responsibility to stop it".

Pompeo on Tuesday accused Iran of using its embassies to plot terrorist attacks in Europe. The State Department released a graphic last week showing eleven Iranian terror attacks or attempts that have taken place over the past 30 years in Europe.

Pompeo, who has been attending a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels flew in from Abu Dhabi, where he discussed Iran with leaders of the United Arab Emirates.

They had allegedly planned to bomb the rally by an exiled Iranian opposition group in Villepinte near Paris that was attended by several USA politicians.

The statement said German authorities arrested the 46-year-old diplomat earlier this month in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg under a European arrest warrant.

Iran denies involvement and contends the allegations against its diplomat are meant to damage its relations with the European Union.

German prosecutors said Wednesday that a court had two days earlier remanded Assadi in custody on charges of foreign intelligence activities and conspiracy to murder. They said he was suspected of having given the couple a device containing 500 grams of the explosive TATP.

He said "the American course of diplomacy and trying to bully the allies into something that they don't want to" are "against their national interest", adding that such a policy "is simply uncivilized and a barbarian way of conducting global diplomacy".

The MEK is an exiled Iranian opposition group based near Paris with some members, in particular, in Albania.

Several British MPs and senior USA politicians were present at the event.
