But a source said senior courtiers discussed which royals should meet the controversial president and shared the same concerns as William and Charles.

Prince Philip - who retired from public engagements a year ago - is also said to have snubbed the occasion.

Both Prince William and Prince Charles are reported to have avoided meeting Donald Trump during his four-day "working visit" to the United Kingdom which ends today, leaving the Queen to meet the U.S. leader alone.

Trump's visit was not a state visit, and other sources at Buckingham Palace and Downing Street told the Times that the plan had always been for Trump to meet exclusively with the queen, and denied the report that the refusal to meet with Trump was an intentional rebuke.

'They simply refused to attend. It is very very unusual for the Queen to be there on on her own.

"Prince Charles has been substituting for Prince Philip recently".

Prince Charles instead chose his company board meeting and a Gloucestershire police event, while Prince William participated in a charity polo match and Prince Harry had "other private engagements", according the report.

Former President Barack Obama is reportedly close with Princes William and Harry and their families.

If Mr Trump's visit had been an official state visit, he would have been expected to see more of the Royal family.

A Whitehall official also revealed that Mr Trump's one-on-one time with the Queen was kept to a "bare minimum".

It is understood that Prince Charles was reluctant to meet President Trump due to their diverging views on climate change, for which Charles is a passionate advocate and Trump a long-time cynic.

"There was never any approach by the government or others, formally or informally, to Clarence House, Kensington Palace or The Duke of York's office".
