French fans were equally as glued to the screen at Alliance Francaise in St Kilda, erupting with pride as they seized World Cup glory again two decades after first doing so.

The high-voltage final later witnessed a major twist in the 38th minute, as the referee gave France a penalty after Perisic's arm was not in a natural position as the ball struck his hand.

France's far-right leader Marine Le Pen tweeted: "Bravo to the French team!"
