Director Ol Parker talks to Helen Brown about the jeopardy and joy of making a prequel to 'Mamma Mia!' Speaking to People, she said, "I was thrilled to death, and it was so silly".

If you want to catch these icons, don't forget to catch Mamma Mia! As for Cher, mind-bogglingly cast as Meryl Streep's mother, she is bewigged and campy and not at all essential to the story.

"I don't know what I was expecting but I walked onto the set and I just thought everyone's just having fun", Cher said.

Empire gave three stars, saying: "You'll cackle at Christine Baranski's crackling dialogue, cry when Meryl sings "My Love, My Life", and when all is said and done you might even be tempted to go again". I suppose this is a spoiler by way of providing context, but Sophie doesn't find out she is pregnant until the very end of the movie.

The legacy cast is joined by a host of newcomers who play younger versions of their characters; among them are Lily James as Donna, Jessica Keenan Wynn as Tanya and Jeremy Irvine as Sam. "I was really nervous but all was great, and you [Amanda Seyfried] were adorable", Cher exclaimed. The other is more timeless, more reflective, that is all I will say. "If you don't like ABBA, spandex and glitter, it will still make you come out in hives but there is a sizeable enough part of the audience with a high tolerance for just such a mixture".

Sporting her usual corkscrew curls and dark sunglasses, the singer proved to only be getting more glamorous with age, as she greeted cameras and admirers on her way inside.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again hit cinemas in the United Kingdom on Monday, and is set for release in the States on Friday.

It was announced earlier this year that all four members of ABBA - Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad - have reunited to record two new songs.

Mamma Mia, which was a hugely successful stage musical first, made more than $600m (£453m) worldwide.

Here they go again!
