In the midst of this taxing schedule leading into the All-Star break, Brewers manager Craig Counsell joked about why he pegged Suter for the second half of the doubleheader. He'd prefer to give playing time to young players, as he tries to build around a core that includes Jameson Taillon, Joe Musgrove, Starling Marte, Gregory Polanco, Elias Diaz and Austin Meadows.

The Pirates (45-49) have won the first two contests in the five-game series, including a 7-3 victory Friday, with a doubleheader set for PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Saturday. His only hit allowed was Dickerson's homer.

That still leaves fourth-place Pittsburgh 9 1/2 games behind the Brewers.

Martinez increased his major league-leading RBI total to 80 with a solo shot, and red-hot Mookie Betts extended his hitting streak to 12 games with three singles to raise the majors' best average to.362. A lot of balls in the middle that got hit. He struck out seven and allowed just one hit through the first five innings.

"It was nice to be back out there, be on the mound and be able to make some pitches early", Holmes said. "I had to make good pitches". Once I started getting into a groove, things started coming together and rolling. "I started attacking the zone and the results came".

The Pirates have won five straight.

Pittsburgh had two other players' homer in the nightcap. Jordan Luplow homered in the sixth and eighth.

The Brewers were 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranded seven runners and have not held a lead in the series. "Be ready to hit, because we are aggressive hitters. We got two extra-base hits in two games".

Gregory Polanco began Pittsburgh's comeback with a one-out single.

Brett Phillips drove in four runs, including an RBI single in the 10th off Pirates reliever Tanner Anderson (1-0). Polanco then drove Anderson's 3-2 offering over the wall in right.

Brewers: OF Eric Thames (right hamstring tightness) and RHP Junior Guerra (right forearm) were placed on the 10-day disabled list. There is "concern" that C Francisco Cervelli (post-concussive symptoms) might have to move out from behind the plate, general manager Neal Huntington said.

Pirates: RHP Ivan Nova (5-6, 4.50 ERA) is in line to start the first game, followed by RHP Clay Holmes (0-1, 7.11 ERA), who is expected to be recalled from High-A Bradenton as the 26th man.

Brewers: RHP Jhoulys Chacin (8-3, 3.78) will look to win a third straight start.
