American intelligence agencies concluded past year that Russian Federation carried out a campaign of hacking and propaganda targeting the 2016 US election, seeking to sow discord and disparage Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

No Russian leader has visited the White House in almost a decade.

Here's how the week played out.

Amid the enduring firestorm, Trump later claimed he misspoke during one exchange with reporters in Finland.

The White House is guarding against the prospect that Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats could damage the president with a high-profile resignation after the nation's top spy chief has suffered a series of slights. Other aides said they anxious the president would take what he said as a "personal betrayal".

Earlier in the press conference, asked if he held Russian Federation responsible in any way for bad relations between the two nations, Trump said both shared some blame. "There is such unbridled passion that even people who can normally have a reasonable discussion, just go overboard", Rivera said. I think it's kept us apart. He was about to talk tax policy with Republican lawmakers at the White House, but came with a sheet of prepared remarks. Dan Sullivan said "I wouldn't do it, that's for damn sure".

"Some people HATE the fact that I got along well with President Putin of Russian Federation...they would rather go to war than see this". I just felt at this point in time that what we had assessed and reassessed and reassessed, carefully gone over still stands. Sort of a double negative.

Moscow's takeover of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine prompted the United States, the European Union, and others to impose sanctions on Russian Federation. Trump's answer seemed to say he thought Russian election meddling was over. In a similar incident, Trump offered a simple "no" after being asked by a reporter if Russian Federation was "still targeting" the United States. "We'd rather not know".it was very clear that anything that might tarnish the NRA, they didn't want to hear".

Russia, Ukraine, and Western countries all support the Minsk agreement publicly, but implementation has been slow and Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of thwarting efforts to carry it out. And there's been no president ever as tough as I have been on Russian Federation.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that meeting may come this fall.

In an interview with "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor Wednesday, President Trump was asked if he holds Putin personally responsible for meddling.

Vladimir Putin proposed holding a referendum in war-torn eastern Ukraine when he met Donald Trump in Helsinki this week, it has been reported.

"Well I would, because he's in charge of the country".

Merkel said the European Union was "ready" to respond if Trump makes good on his threat to slap steep tariffs on foreign cars, a move that would hit Germany's auto industry particularly hard.
