Internal Apple Documentation Confirms MacBook Pro Keyboard Fix

The document titled "Butterfly Mechanism Keycap Replacement MacBook Pro (2018)" also advises service providers to take care not to rip the membrane when performing repairs as it would require "a top case replacement".

Apple does it again, but this time, instead of throttling the speeds of their older iPhone processors, they are doing it to their latest MacBook Pro models.

Now, MacRumors has obtained an internal document in which Apple has confirmed that the third-generation keyboard in 2018 MacBook Pro models is indeed equipped with a membrane to "prevent debris from entering the butterfly mechanism".

Do remember that this restriction has only been removed from the 2018 variant of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. "Be careful not to tear the membrane", the firm warns in another document, stating that a torn membrane "will result in a top case replacement". Admitting to fixing the problem with a keyboard redesign could hurt Apple, as it may be a sign of a larger problem.

While Apple confirmed the new keyboard on the latest MacBook Pros isn't created to fix the issue, the company quietly added a new silicone cover over the butterfly switches to protect against dust. Also, according to MacRumors' report, third-generation keyboards that feature this membrane will not be offered as replacements in the fix program.

While the jury is still out as to the effectiveness of the membrane in preventing stuck keys, those receiving keyboard repairs for their earlier MacBooks should not expect the same type of ingress prevention.

Unfortunately, owners of the new MacBook Pro with the i9 processor are finding their computers are having a hard time reaching the advertised 2.9GHz speeds - mainly because the laptop's built-in cooling system can't keep up with the intense heat that the Core i9 produces. "Under load, the CPU speed clocks down to MUCH lower than the base 2.9GHz, even matching the average clock speeds of the base 15" MacBook Pro's i7 CPU". There are now numerous Reddit threads of users documenting their grievances with the new i9 chip.
