Alisson signs on with Liverpool

Liverpool have made Alisson Ramses Becker the most expensive goalkeeper of all time after signing the Brazilian worldwide for £66.8m from AS Roma.

Since 2001, the world record transfer of a goalkeeper had been set by Gianluigi Buffon's £32.6m move from Parma to Juventus until previous year.

Alisson had always been linked with a move away from Roma after enjoying a fine season in 2017-18, playing a big role in the side which reached the Champions League semi-finals, before being eliminated by the Reds.

He started all five games for Brazil at the World Cup in Russian Federation where they bowed out in a quarter-final defeat by Belgium.

The Egyptian winger hit the ground running as he had his most prolific season of his career under Jurgen Klopp, and Liverpool fans will be hoping that Alisson can start with similarly good form. He has entered a dressing room that already has a Brazilian influence in Roberto Firmino and has been bolstered by the arrival of goalkeeper Alisson Becker. It is somewhat ironic that just two weeks after Gigi Buffon left Juventus, the world record fee for a goalkeeper - set when the Italian icon joined the Bianconeri from Parma seventeen years ago- was finally smashed. He has nothing to do with the price, we have nothing to do with the price, it's the market, that's how it is and we will not think a lot about it.

"I think it's something we have to do".

"But of course he still has to adapt and age-wise he can improve, the best years are coming in the goalkeeper life, so it's all good". I have told him: although we are friends, when we play each other maybe I will be a bit harsh!

Tite, Dunga's replacement, stuck with Alisson despite Ederson's excellent displays for Man City last season. Just 25, Alisson has only played one full season as a No 1 in Europe so has tremendous scope for improvement. Although, obviously, keeping the goals out rather than banging them in. Off the pitch we are very good friends but on the pitch?

On whether or not he cut his holiday short, the Brazilian said: "Yes, I did cut them short a bit but I was immensely satisfied to do so, to make this dream come true and take the next step in my career".
