News of Mr Trump's invite caught many in Washington by surprise.

Huckabee Sanders also announced that the White House would not proceed with a plan to extradite U.S. citizens to Russian Federation for questioning in exchange for Russian Federation allowing its intelligence officials to be questioned as part of the Mueller probe.

"Look, the fact is we got along well", Trump said in the interview, which was taped on Thursday.

Mr Putin has also described the summit as "successful" but warned "there are forces in the United States that are prepared to casually sacrifice Russian-US relations".
