Star Trek: Discovery is boldly going into classic Trek territory this season. Also, Alex Kurtzman is the showrunner now, and he's not a very good writer or director. (Pike mentions that he "took leave" in the trailer.) But we will see another familiar crew member: Mount let it slip that Rebecca Romijn (The Librarians) will join the cast as Number One, Pike's right-hand (wo) man played by Majel Barrett in the original Trek series.

The four Short Treks episodes will roll out monthly beginning this fall, and will be stand-alone stories, each running approximately 10 to 15 minutes. She would later go on to have roles in later Star Trek shows and films as well.

The trailer links the timeline of "Discovery", which is set roughly a decade before James Kirk takes the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise with former Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike taking command of the U.S.S. Discovery, due to a Federation regulation which takes effect in times of imminent danger.

Spock actually isn't the only well-known Star Trek character that will pop up in Discovery come season 2.

The trailer also offered a first look at the show's spiffy throwback uniforms, with Pike's uniform giving fans a flashback to the gold shirts of the original series. Mr. Spock, who was played memorably by the late Leonard Nimoy, served as Pike's Science Officer. CBS's streaming show Star Trek: Discovery will explore some unusual new backstories with a series of shorts called Star Trek: Short Treks. The new season will premiere sometime in 2019 on CBS All-Access; you can see the pics below of Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham and David Benjamin Tomlinson as the Saurian Linus.
