Maines will play Nia Nal, the newest addition to CatCo's reporting team who is fierce and driven to protect others. Over the course of the season, Nal will be coming into her own as a superhero.

Johannson's casting, according to Maines, would've only furthered stereotypes about the trans community.

"We can be whoever we want, we can do whatever we want, we can be superheroes, because in many ways we are", adding, "We've had trans representation in television for a while but it hasn't been the right representation". But what's great about this show is it shows so many different types of people and so many different types of heroes. With trans folks we have a lot of people accusing us of just playing dress up for whatever reasons and that's just not true. "She's so wide-eyed. She's just happy to be included", Maines said.

"She has this ferocious drive to protect people and to fight against discrimination and hatred", Maines told the audience during the panel.

The activist's case went all the way to the Maine Supreme Court in 2013 when the court ruled that transgenders can use the bathroom of their choice.

Maines was featured in the HBO documentary The Trans List and is the subject of the book Becoming Nicole by author Amy Ellis Nutt. Maines's previous acting credit was on the U.S. network series Royal Pains.

Maines' casting isn't the only groundbreaking move by Supergirl. Two seasons ago, Supergirl revealed that Kara's older, adoptive sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), was gay. "We wanted to bring great awareness and tell an authentic story". April Parker Jones (If Loving You Is Wrong, Jericho, The Last Ship) is set to play Colonel Haley, a "hardline career military woman" who is fiercely dedicated to her country and loyal to a fault to her commanding officers. Manchester Black is a "the type of guy who brings a knife to a gunfight and still walks away the victor".

Manchester Black, played by David Ajala, is described as having "a dark past" that leads him to deflect "the brutality of his mission with his charm and sense of humor".

The CW has released the season four trailer for Supergirl, which will premiere on October 14 at 8 PM ET.
