Suspected gunman 'holding hostages' inside Los Angeles supermarket

Los Angeles police descended a Trader Joe's in Silver Lake near downtown Los Angeles Saturday afternoon (Sunday NZT) after a gunman opened fired outside the store at end of a police pursuit, sending shoppers diving for cover.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed the auto into a pole outside of the Trader Joe's police said.

A witness tweeted he got out of the store safely, along with some employees.

A lockdown is happening with the entire area being evacuated.

Prior to the standoff at the grocery store, the suspect allegedly shot his grandmother and girlfriend before fleeing in his vehicle, CBS Los Angeles reported citing a police source.


Traffic in the Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater area quickly jammed up and the LAPD urged the public to stay away from the area.

Photos posted on social media show a vehicle crashed outside the store entrance as heavily armed police swarm the area.

The incident started around 3:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. ET) and prompted a major police response. Other views from TV helicopters showed people leaving through the front door with their hands up.

The video also showed officers carrying a person who appeared to be injured, as well as people climbing out of a store window and down a rope ladder.

It is unknown if shots fired were from police or the suspect.
