Trump claims his campaign was illegally spied upon

"The FBI believes that Page has been collaborating and conspiring with the Russian government", the application states, adding that "there is probable cause that such activities involve or are about to involve violations of the criminal statutes of the United States".

"The FBI believes Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the Russian government", the initial FBI application says before it is blacked out and continues: "undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election in violation of U.S. criminal law". "I think that's different from spying on a campaign".

Among other things, Nunes asserted that the application had not properly informed the court of the political nature of former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele's work in compiling a dossier on Trump, information from which was included in the application for a warrant to surveil Page.

The FBI released the previously secret document cache on Saturday night following Freedom of Information requests by several U.S. organisations.

The documents released include applications and renewal warrants filed in 2017 after Mr Trump took office.

The document released Saturday, which is more than 400 pages and includes the initial October 2016 FISA warrant on Page as well as three subsequent renewals, says that the Federal Bureau of Investigation "believes Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the Russian government".

Former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page on Sunday denied he was an intelligence agent for Russian Federation after the Justice Department released a wiretap application that said he engaged in "clandestine intelligence activities" on behalf of the Kremlin.

It added that "Page has established relationships with Russian Government officials, including Russian intelligence officers".

Mr Page told The Hill he was "having trouble finding any small bit of this document that rises above complete ignorance and/or insanity".

Gowdy on Sunday noted that the FBI never indicted Page following the investigation.

Thought Carter Page was just a kooky dream you had?

"I've never been an agent of a foreign power by any stretch of the imagination", Page said on CNN's "State of the Union".

"Jake, it's really spin, I sat in on some meetings, but to call me an adviser is way over the top", Page said.

The warrants describe a trip Page took to Russian Federation in 2016 to speak at the New Economic School. He first reached out to the Trump campaign in 2015 before meeting Mr Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, in January 2016. Instead, it acknowledged events previously reported by the New York Times: A former Trump foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, came under the scrutiny of investigators in July 2016 after boasting that Russian Federation had dirt on then-candidate Hillary Clinton to an Australian diplomat in London.

What did Mr Trump say?

The FBI has released documents related to the surveillance of a former campaign adviser to Donald Trump as part of its probe into whether the aide conspired with the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election.
