With new signing Alisson yet to join up with his Liverpool team-mates, Loris Karius was in goal at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Karius has been a subject of ridicule from many fans after two glaring errors against Real Madrid in Liverpool's 3-1 Champions League final defeat.

Seconds later Dortmund went up the other end and were awarded a penalty when Pulisic was adjudged to have brought down by James Milner.

Philipp wasted another early opening by firing a tame strike straight at Karius before Liverpool were forced into an early change, with defender Joel Matip taken off with a suspected thigh injury.

Liverpool took the lead Virgil van Dijk in the first half but Dortmund claimed the advantage through a Christian Pulisic double.

A quiet start to the match saw the best chance of the opening stages come from 45 yards out when Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius was nearly guilty of another error, coming off his line to sweep up the danger but giving the ball straight to Maximilian Philipp.

Better was to follow for the American, a target for Sunday's opponents, as he put the Germans into the lead with a minute to play.

"A few players after five minutes thought "wow" where are we here?"

Liverpool: Karius (5), Clyne (6), Matip (6), Van Dijk (8), Robertson (7), Fabinho (7), Lallana (6), Jones (6), Camacho (7), Origi (6), Markovic (5).

Andrew Robertson - 7: Never really exerted himself, his cross to set up Van Dijk's towering header for the first goal was perfection, holding himself back waiting for the season proper to start.

And now against Dortmund it has happened again, just four minutes into the game before a later error gave away a goal.

Deep into stoppage time, the USA worldwide beat his defender in the box and Loris Karius parried his shot into the path of Jacob Bruun Larsen, who finished into an empty net.

Ojo should have scored when the lively Daniel Sturridge sent him clear but goalkeeper Marwin Hitz got enough on the shot to turn it on to the woodwork.

However, Dortmund managed to snatch the winning goal in the 89th minute as Pulisic completed his brace by drilling home a left-footed effort into the far corner after being picked out by Marcel Schelzer.
