Participants in the medical trial - including Jonah Hill as the schizophrenic Owen and Emma Stone as the dissociative Annie - are given experimental treatments which seem to transform their senses of place and their senses of self.

Better yet, despite featuring plenty of action involving Hill and Stone in various movie-style guises (which may all exist in their heads), as well as some bizarrely humorous moments featuring Theroux and Sally Field, this full-length trailer maintains considerable mystery about the show's actual plot - meaning you can check it out without fear of being exposed to unreasonable spoilers. He's such a wonderful director who can really elevate a series to greatness (see True Detective Season 1, which he directed, versus Season 2 which he did not).

The show, spanning ten episodes, will be available to watch all at once.

Maniac is based on the 2014 Norwegian series and is largely set in the fantasy worlds of the characters that Hill and Stone play. The duo previously appeared in the 2007 comedy Superbad.

The black comedy series revolves around a group of people who enter into a odd pharmaceutical trial for very different reasons.

They, and other strangers, enter a three-day trial for a supposedly miraculous drug whose makers' claim it can permanently cure their ills without leaving any harmful side-effects. Emma Stone plays Annie Landsberg who is fixated on her broken relationships with her mother and her sister. Things do not go as planned. Maniac represents Netflix's latest shot at commercial and critical glory, of course, but it's also a reminder of how much influence the company now has in the entertainment world - it can attract all-star productions that would have been unfathomable just a few years ago.
