Iran, US Trade Barbs Ahead Of Renewed Sanctions On Tehran

European allies said they "deeply regret" the United States action.

On Monday, the European Union's diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc, as well as Britain, France and Germany, deeply regretted Washington's move.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani struck a hard line Monday as the USA restored some sanctions that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.

"Our policy is based on a clear-eyed assessment of the Iranian dictatorship, its sponsorship of terrorism, and its continuing aggression in the Middle East and all around the world", President Trump said in a statement.

"Today, the entire world has declared they are not in line with U.S. policies against Iran", Zarif said in a speech, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. The US is threatening "severe consequences" for those who don't abide by their sanctions. China has already ruled out halting oil buys, for instance. Speaking in a television interview, he also demanded compensation for decades of American "intervention" in the Islamic Republic. The country's rial currency has tanked, and the downturn has sparked protests across the nation.

Mr Rouhani said: "They want to launch psychological warfare against the Iranian nation". He added: "US hypocrisy knows no bounds".

"If the US government is ready to negotiate about paying compensation to the Iranian nation from 1953 until now", Rouhani said. The administration insists that a "change of behaviour", and not regime change, is the goal, but John Bolton, Mr Trump's national security adviser, has promoted regime change in the past and there is little to indicate that...

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said sanctions are an important pillar in US policy toward Iran and will remain in place until the Iranian government radically changes course.

"Looking at the region from Yemen to Syria to Gaza, the Iranian regime is using the resources they had got from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action [the official name of the 2015 deal] to spread human misery across the region, instead of investing it in their people at home", an official said. "That's the ask. It's pretty simple", said Pompeo, en route Sunday from a three-nation trip to Southeast Asia.

The U.S has long designated Iran as the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism, Pompeo noted Sunday, adding that the Islamic Republic can not expect to be treated as an equal in the global community until it halts such activities. The US ability to force big powers to go along with unilateral sanctions is very much being tested.
