Trump tackles Russian lawyer claims head on

U.S. President Donald Trump, in the midst of a working vacation, unleashed a new barrage of attacks on the national news media Sunday, saying it was "very unsafe & sick!"

As he has in the past, Trump insisted in a tweet that he did not know at the time about the meeting between his son Donald Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer with links to the Kremlin.

The president also said in his tweet Sunday that the Trump Tower meeting was "to get information on an opponent", which is a departure from the initial statement that asserted that the primary objective of the meeting was to discuss the issue of adoptions. "You then misled the country about the objective of the Trump Tower meeting when it became public".

Schiff said he believes congressional investigators found evidence of conspiracy and collusion by the Trump campaign, including Trump Jr.'s meeting with the Russian attorney at Trump Tower.

Sekulow also on "This Week" supported the president's claim that there was nothing legally questionable about Trump Jr. having the June 2016 meeting with the Russians.

The first is that Trump appears to have broken some new ground here when it comes to admitting the true goal of the Trump Tower meeting with a Kremlin-aligned lawyer - and even further contradicted the initial statement he helped draft about it.

President Trump frantically tweeted that the goal of the Trump tower meeting was to gather dirt on Hilliary Clinton. "Somehow you got cut off - they started playing the recording and then it got cut off", he said.

Trump had earlier claimed that the meeting was about the adoption of Russian children, reported Reuters, a statement contradicted by Trump Jr, who said that the objective was to gather information on Clinton. "In agreeing to the meeting, the younger Trump told Goldstone, "(I) f it's what you say I love it".

"Well, the question is, 'How would it be illegal?'" Sekulow said of the meeting.

While "collusion" is not mentioned in USA criminal statutes, Mueller is investigating whether anyone associated with Trump coordinated with the Russians, which could result in criminal charges if they entered into a conspiracy to break the law, including through cyberhacking or interfering with the election. She suggested, however, that Trump's supporters in the Republican Party just might choose to defend him if it is proven that his campaign did indeed collude with Russian officials ahead of the 2016 presidential elections.

He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!"

Trump was not involved in drafting his son's misleading statement.

"But I think, look, if you get a subpoena, you file what's called a motion to quash", Sekulow told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.

This was initially denied by Mr Trump's team, but his lawyers later confirmed that he had in fact dictated his son's statement.

He defended calling the media "The Enemy of the People", and said journalists "purposely cause great division & distrust" and can "cause War!"

In another, he expressed frustration with both the media and Mueller's probe. Trump wrote. "They are very unsafe & sick!"
