Ranked Dota 2 players demolished by AI

On Sunday, a team of bots developed by OpenAI defeated highly-ranked humans at Dota 2, one of the most popular, complex and highly paid e-sports games in the world.

OpenAI bots played a match (with some significant alterations) against current pro player David "MoonMeander" Tan, former pros Ben "Merlini" Wu, William "Blitz" Lee and Ioannis "Fogged" Lucas and caster Austin "Capitalist" Walsh.

At a recent battle between the human players and the team of bots, the team of human players managed to win just one game from the artificially intelligent bot, CNET reported. This resulted in the bot predicting a lower chance of winning of the match.

OpenAI Five hammered its human opponents in the first two rounds, but for the last game the audience picked a team of five heroes while the AI's were pre-selected.

The bots have only gotten better from there, sharpening their game-playing skills even to the point of being able to crush players who've been competing at Dota 2 since its beginning. The second match saw the pro team take out one of OpenAI's towers, but the AI group won regardless. "This reaction time is much closer to human level, though we haven't seen evidence of changes in gameplay as OpenAI Five's strength comes more from teamwork and coordination than reflexes".

Every member of Team Human were selected on the criteria of being within the 99th percentile of players, which makes sense considering that majority used to be active pro players.

A few years ago, many researchers thought it was impossible for AI systems to get so good at complex team-based games like Dota 2, but here we are. The bots are powered by five artificial neural networks trained to play the game from scratch using reinforcement learning, an iterative process that involves observation, action and feedback. Nevertheless, it is still up for question if OpenAI Five can beat the best players in the game at The International later this month. These are all people who now or previously play Dota 2 professionally - they're in the 99.95th percentile of human players.
