However, there are several other barriers to breastfeeding children including ignorance of benefits of breastfeeding, improper advice from friends and family leading to supplement breast milk with formula, lack of support for working mothers from employers in providing environment conducive for breastfeeding, and lack of trained health workers who can guide new mothers about the right techniques of breastfeeding. "Specific guidance is required for mothers who had cesarean sections or with low birth weight babies", it is stated in the report titled "Arrested Development- Assessment of India's Policy and Programmes on Infant and Young Child Feeding 2018". Despite wide acknowledgement of the strong health and nutritional benefits of breastfeeding, only about 15% of new mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies for the recommended six months (2010 Australian National Infant Feeding Survey). It means the child will not be giving water or herbal concoction for a whole six months.

The governor's wife commended the theme for this year: "Breastfeeding: Foundation for Life", describing it as the basic truth about the practice.

The Michigan Breastfeeding Network has announced a statewide project to help provide quality care for moms and babies overtime.

World Health Organization recommends that infants start receiving complementary foods at 6 months of age in addition to breast milk, initially 2-3 times a day between 6 and 8 months, increasing to 3-4 times daily between 9 and 11 months and 12-24 months with additional nutritious snacks offered 1-2 times per day, as desired.

"We sometimes think breastfeeding is dependent on the mother alone, yet we are not careful enough to address the contributing factors of a healthy mom during breastfeeding period", said Okere. "The ministry has also launched an exclusive programme on breastfeeding called "Mother's Absolute Affection" (MAA) that for the first time has made an allocation of Rs 4.5 lakh per district to promote breastfeeding". Nutritious complementary foods should then be added while continuing to breastfeed for up to two years or beyond.

Mothers who may experience challenges with breastfeeding such as, engorgement, nipple pain/trauma or when the baby won't latch to the breast are encouraged to visit their nearest clinic for assistance. It also boosts the child's Intelligent Quotient (IQ) and lowers his or her tendency of developing into a violent adult. This process signals the body to prepare more milk for future use and that's how milk production can be increased.

Yet, worldwide, there are still low levels of optimal breastfeeding.

The City of Cape Town's Health Department has embarked on an initiative to create breastfeeding corners at clinics for mothers.
