Not only is the Mustang America's best-selling sports auto of the last 50 years, but figures prove Ford's pony vehicle remains the world's best-selling sports vehicle for a third year running.

Iconic muscle auto crosses major milestone, having been in production for 54 years; 10 millionth example pays tribute to the first serialised Mustang.

To mark the occasion, Ford said on Wednesday that it invited 60 Mustang owners representing each generation of the ponycar to celebrate the 10 millionth auto at its Flat Rock, Michigan, assembly plant. There's good reason for the specifications, too.

The 10 millionth Mustang is a GT convertible model finished in Wimbledon White to honor the first serialized 1964 1/2 Mustang.

The automaker marked the occasion with a gathering of some 60 Mustang owners, who parked their new and classic pony cars to spell out '10,000,000.' A trio of P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft were prepared for a fly-by over the site as well.

"Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favourite around the world", Jim Farley, Ford's president of global markets, said in a news release. The event saw a parade of five decades worth of Pony cars cruising from Dearborn to Flat Rock where the Mustang is now manufactured.

The latest Ford Mustang offers an extensive array of technology and performance, the pinnacles of modern engineering showcased with Ford's 2019 Mustang Bullitt.

It's not all been smooth sailing, however. Here's to the next 10 million!

One thing's for sure, even though Ford is getting rid of all of its other vehicle models in favor of utilities and trucks, it has no plans to put its pony out to pasture.
