Hundreds of tourists in Lombok evacuated after quake

It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok.

The quake hit a week after a magnitude-6.4 temblor killed 17 people, injured more than 160, and caused widespread damage to buildings.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Indonesia, particularly the people of Lombok, where the quake occurred", Mr Turnbull said.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that 89 of the victims died on Lombok Island and two on nearby Bali Island. At the time, killed 17 people, and more than a hundred people were injured of varying severity.

"People panicked and scattered on the streets and buildings and houses that had been damaged by the previous quake had become more damaged and collapsed", Sutopo said.

The seven-magnitude tremor struck just 10 kilometres underground, according to the US Geological Survey.

"There are 700 more tourists still waiting to be evacuated", he said, adding some hotels had been damaged by the quake.

"The police officers there were kind", he said, though the airport was chaotic with a lot of people.

Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen, reporting from Bangsal in northern Lombok, said the military was helping to evacuate tourists but many were left stranded in Bangsal. Many victims were treated outdoors because hospitals were damaged. This latest 6.9 magnitude quake caused buildings to crumble and collapse, killing and injuring those who fled to the streets.

The tsunami warning covered North Lombok, East and North Bali, the north side of East Java, Southeast Madura, South Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi. However, an initial warning of a tsunami with waves of up to half a metre was later withdrawn.

Thousands left homeless by a powerful natural disaster on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok are sheltering in makeshift tents.

In one of a series of tweets, Teigen wrote: "Another aftershock just now. probably the 8th one we have felt since the big one last night. we are safe, up high and nothing around us. thinking about everyone around us and in Lombok especially".

Teigen said the island was experiencing aftershocks and she walked outside naked holding her newborn son.

A 6.4-magnitude natural disaster struck the same region on July 29, which caused some damage, the nation's officials said. My thoughts and prayers for everyone in Lombok and Bali.

Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

The archipelago of thousands of islands sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot.

BNPB had previously put the number of dead at 105, including two on the western neighboring island of Bali, which also felt the 6.9 magnitude quake. "We were knocked certainly to the floor", he told Australian radio. "Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking".

"Everyone's a bit shaken, but all well, but people out in the villages or elsewhere haven't been so lucky, unfortunately".

Chrissy Teigen who is vacationing in nearby Bali witnessed the quake first hand from relatively safe distance.
