Downing also ventured into territory both sides had agreed to avoid: discussion of Donald Trump's presidential campaign. "I'm not sure why, but there have been certain exchanges at sidebar that have seemed not all that judicious to me", he said.

But when Downing tried to question Gates on Tuesday about what the special counsel team had asked him about the Trump campaign, Andres objected.

The judge then brought the trial to a standstill late Tuesday afternoon, calling a brief recess.

Using charts, emails and financial and tax records, Magionos told jurors how she traced millions of dollars back to his hidden foreign bank accounts.

Mr Gates recounted how he and Mr Manafort used more than a dozen offshore shell companies and bank accounts in Cyprus to funnel the money, all while concealing the accounts and the income from the IRS.

But Downing wasn't able to re-ask Gates the question about four extramarital affairs. Downing had said he wanted to ask the question because it spoke to whether Gates had lied to Mueller's office, and whether Gates' plea agreement would still be valid.

He scoffed at the idea Mr Gates had repented for his actions, noting that prosecutors have said they won't oppose his bid for probation and getting him to acknowledge he had not repaid the money he had taken from Mr Manafort.

Gates said he helped Manafort hide secret bank accounts in the United Kingdom, Cyprus and the Grenadines.

Gates, who pleaded guilty in February to charges of conspiracy and lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, admitted to committing crimes with former business associate Manafort earlier this week.

Manafort was on Trump's campaign team from March to August 2016, starting as a delegate-wrangler and serving as campaign chairman in the last three months.

"Mr. Manafort requested. that we did not disclose foreign bank accounts", Gates testified.

The jury has heard how Manafort made tens of millions of dollars working for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine. Referring to Manafort's pretrial confinement, Trump asked whether Manafort was being treated worse than Al Capone.

Trump has recently sought to distance himself from Manafort, tweeting that the former top campaign official "worked for me for a very short time".

"After all the lies you've told and fraud you've committed, you expect this jury to believe you?"

Prosecutors allege that the Federal Savings Bank lent Manafort money based on fraudulent documents.

She essentially connected the dots of testimony from previous witnesses - vendors, Manafort's bookkeeper and accountants, and Gates - but did so in a way that presented direct links between one witness's part of the story and another's.

NBC's Pete Williams also reported that prosecutors want Ellis to "explain to the jury that he was out of line when he reprimanded them over allowing an IRS agent witness to watch other testimony", according to NBC's Ken Dilanian.

It was a long day of drama between the former business associates, who didn't appear to meet each other's eyes in the courtroom.

Paul Manafort's attorney Kevin Downing on Wednesday asked whether longtime Manafort deputy Rick Gates had four extramarital affairs - and not just one overseas 10 years ago - implying that Gates might have lied to special counsel Robert Mueller's team and could put his plea deal in jeopardy. Gates' ongoing testimony on Tuesday - the sixth day of Manafort's fraud trial - came one day after he testified that he'd committed crimes with Manafort. Gates also fabricated a forgiveness letter for what he said was already a fake loan between Manafort's consulting company and a Cypriot entity he controlled. But Gates' testimony also revealed he was a deeply disreputable co-conspirator as Manafort's underling.
