Sen. Bill Nelson is among the lawmakers opposed to the idea.

Currently, the Air Force oversees most space capabilities and there is some push back from officials who worry Space Force's mission would be duplicative and create turf wars. The proposal would also need Congressional approval.

He did, however, say the Pentagon was in "complete agreement" with the White House. The department would first come together under an assistant secretary of defense for space, Pence said, and later receive a dedicated service secretary as development matured.

On June 18, Trump showed that he was serious about the Space Force by formally directing the Pentagon to create the new military branch. This will be an "elite group of joint war fighters specializing in the domain of space", and it will draw its ranks from men and women from across the military, according to Pence.

"This is a critical step toward's establishing the Space Force as the sixth branch of our armed forces".

The new command and reorganisation "should be budget neutral", Scott Pace, the executive secretary of the National Space Council, said in an interview.

Trump, in an act of support, took to his favourite social medium to tweet the five words 'Space Force all the way!', causing a number of people to question his thought process.

The creation of a Space Force has met with opposition, inside and out of the Pentagon.

As the US continues to stave off competition and threats from both Russian Federation and China, the White House has decided it will create the US Space Force as a sixth, separate military service by 2020.

The U.S. Air Force Space Command already handles the country's security and surveillance in space.

The report lays out four steps that it will take to start the reorganization the military with a goal of creating a fully independent Space Force within a few years, depending on how quickly Congress moves to pass legislation.

"Across this department and our intelligence agencies, there are literally tens of thousands of military personnel, civilians and contractors operating and supporting our space systems - and together, they are the eyes and ears of America's warfighters around the globe", Pence said. Space is vital to the way the United States wages war; The Pentagon's satellites are used for missile-defence warnings, guiding precision munitions, and providing communications and reconnaissance. In 2007, China destroyed one of its dead weather satellites with a missile. It also demonstrated the ability to hit satellites in a much deeper orbit where the military parks some of its most sensitive assets.

"Both nations are also investing heavily in what is known as hypersonic missiles created to fly up to five miles per second at such low altitudes that they could potentially evade detection via our missile defence radars". "But history proves that peace only comes through strength".

"It is imperative that the United States adapts its policies, doctrine, and capabilities to protect our interests", the document states.
