The two have attended several martial arts events together.

A statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday says that Seagal's unpaid role aims to strengthen "contacts, mutual understanding and trust between the peoples of Russia and the United States".

A statement issued by Russia's Foreign Ministry announced: "Steven Seagal was appointed as the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative for Russian-US humanitarian ties".

While the 66-year-old star of '90s karate flicks such as Above The Law and Out For Justice might come across as a odd choice, Seagal has been wooed by Russian President Vladimir Putin the past few years.

The 66-year-old actor, who appeared in more than 60 movies, told Russia Today the following.

"I've always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve".

The actor has been a Russian citizen since November 2016.

"I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been appointed as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of Russian and American Humanitarian ties".

A Kremlin spokesman cited Seagal's "warm feelings toward Russia" and his celebrity status as reasons for the gesture, Reuters reported. For instance, veteran French actor Gérard Depardieu was given a Russian passport in 2013, after becoming a tax exile.

"For anyone to think that Vladimir Putin had anything to do with fixing the elections, or even that the Russians have that kind of technology, is stupid", said Seagal onGood Morning Britain a year ago, calling statements that say otherwise "propaganda". As The Guardian noted, Seagal called Putin "one of the great living world leaders" and even performed with his blues band in Crimea.

Apart from his commitments with Russia, Seagal has co-signed dubious cryptocurrency schemes and has been accused by numerous women, including Portia De Rossi and Bond actress Rachel Grant, of abuse and sexual harassment.
