Jose Mourinho hits back at critics

"I am not confident, and the market closes today, so it's time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

Manchester United's hopes of reinforcing their squad before Thursday's 5pm transfer deadline appear to be over after José Mourinho said his latest information was that the club had been unable to secure any of their targets.

Martin Fisher: Jose Mourinho rarely smiled last season and his expression hasn't changed after a summer of frustration.

"I am not confident", Mourinho said. Ivan Perisic, the Croatia global, also featured prominently on Mourinho's wish list but it now seems that United's summer transfer business will be restricted to the arrivals of Fred, the injured Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, signed from Stoke City as a third-choice goalkeeper. However, there was no indication that it was a deliberate tactic on his part or that he was being economical with the truth.

The striker turned broadcast pundit believes Liverpool's mental edge over City following three victories against them last season - twice in the Champions League and once in the league - could be the difference if City do not runaway with the title in the manner they did last season.

The pair were asked to pick their Premier League predictions ahead of the new season.

"I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to this first couple of matches". Sometimes its also hard to believe I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues, and I keep thinking the second position a year ago was one of my biggest achievements in England'.

"You also have to consider that Liverpool are City's Kryptonite". Unai Emery, he says, will need another two transfer windows to hew Arsenal into contenders while he "loves Mauricio Pochettino to bits", he lists four major stumbling blocks to Tottenham's hopes of a first Premier League title: "They haven't signed anyone, they've got their first four games away, they've changed stadiums and they've had I think nine players out of the starting 11 playing in the very latter stages of the World Cup".

And while those players are all now back in training, with Lukaku, Rashford and Jones having returned earlier than scheduled, Mourinho has admitted he will still be without a number of key players against Leicester. "In Championship Manager you can just press a button". It gives us a couple of weeks to recover people and to prepare people better and to focus on the players that are available, so I'm not even thinking about that list of players I gave you - Matic, Valencia and so on.

It was claimed United were planning a shock move for Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin today - although the player has since agreed a new contract to stay in the Spanish capital.
