It may seem unusual that the man set to benefit most from pre-season is a player who is yet to kick a ball for Southampton but that is the case for Danny Ings, after it became clear the Saints desperately need an attacking boost.

Liverpool striker Ings joined the South Coast club on Thursday as part of an initial season-long loan with the deal to become permanent on July 1, 2019.

Ings, who was brought up kicking a ball around at Netley Recreation Ground, joined on a season-long loan deal yesterday ahead of making the move permanent next summer in a £16m deal.

"Loved this day in LA!" in a caption that accompanies her photo on a sunlit beach in a teasing outfit.

"When he said to us he thinks this is the window it might be best to look elsewhere, for the sake of his career and playing more regular football, it was clear early on that Southampton has great appeal to him personally".

"We all know his story and the bad luck he has had since then".

"It is a very unusual feeling saying goodbye to Danny".

"It's why the other emotion is that of being pleased for Danny that he has such a good move and his future is now very bright". Born in nearby Winchester, Ings was a boyhood Saints fan and still has family on the South Coast. They have a great manager and I think the supporters and him will feed off each other's passion and energy. He is as fit now as at any point of his career I would bet and he just requires the opportunity.

The fee is variable though, and the Saints could be required to pay a further £2m in appearance-related add-ons, while Liverpool also have a 20% sell-on clause.

"The two clubs obviously had to come to an arrangement where they were comfortable with the deal on offer and in the end we got to the point where it was a win win situation for both clubs and, more importantly, for Danny as well, because he's come to a club he's clearly got a lot of affection for and maybe a point to prove". He's trained and had game time in pre-season.
