For all of their attacking and goalkeeping talents, however, most football fans can agree that United's defence needed reinforcing this summer.

EVERTON showed Manchester United how to land their transfer targets with three big-name signings yesterday, while Jose Mourinho was left empty-handed on deadline day.

Despite selling him at Chelsea, Mourinho brought Lukaku to Old Trafford last summer and it's evident that he's a big admirer of the Belgian hitman.

United, who finished second in the Premier League last term, brought in goalkeeper Lee Grant, defender Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred, but Mourinho is thought to have wanted a new centre-back and has openly criticised the club's failure to back him.

United had seven players involved in the final weekend of the World Cup with Romelu Lukaku, Marouane Fellaini, Phil Jones, Marcus Rashford, Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba representing the club and set to return late.

Yerry Mina was offered by Barcelona to United and a number of other clubs before the World Cup for €11m in an attempt by the Spanish champions to get their money back on a player they signed in January.

The move was created to ease disruption in the first few weeks of the campaign after a number of high-profile players, including Alexis Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk, missed matches at the start of last season due to transfer speculation.

Manchester United begins its season off on the right foot, with World Cup-winner Paul Pogba scoring alongside Romelu Lukaku.

"If they feel they can help us, 20 minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour".

"The information I have is no", said Mourinho when asked if he would be adding to his squad. "I'd prefer to have them even if they are not top, top, top".

"No miracles", he told a press conference (via United's official website). But Mourinho now says he is focusing on the players already at his disposal.

"I relish every challenge, it doesn't matter what, I love to work".

"You [the media] repeat 1,000 times my relations with my players is not good", Mourinho stated.
