Stefanos Tsitsipas stuns Novak Djokovic in Toronto third round

Next up for Djokovic in the round of 16 is Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas, who upset Austrian seventh seed Dominic Thiem 6-3 7-6 (6).

The 19-year-old forced the former world number one Djokovic onto the back foot in the first set but was unable to wrap up a straight-sets win as the 13-time Grand Slam champion claimed the tiebreak with the Greek firing long having saved two set points.

"Losing in this kind of tournament, it's not something I don't care about", Djokovic said.

He held serve to open the set and wrong-footed Djokovic after the veteran served at deuce, setting up an overhead smash for the advantage before a brilliant backhand victor secured a 2-0 lead.

Tsitsipas set up match point with a scorching crosscourt victor before completing the victory in their first career meeting in two hours, 17 minutes.


Djokovic said he was having no problems with the shot clock despite being a player who regularly picks up violations for the length of time he takes between points.

"I'm very pleased, I needed a match like this".

Nadal came from a mini-break down in the tiebreaker and secured victory on his second match point. "Just happy to be in the quarterfinals".

Defending Rogers Cup champion Alexander Zverev of Germany was to play Russian qualifier Daniil Medvedev in the late afternoon match. "I just played not that great. Del Potro, who had a bye in the first round after reaching the Los Cabos final last week, was set to play Robin Haase of the Netherlands. Khachanov beat eighth-seeded John Isner of the United States 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1), and Haase topped Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 6-2.
