The purpose-built Mustang race auto isn't named after a specific production model, but its bodywork most closely resembles the GT350.

Ford Performance and the design team's goal was to build a stock vehicle that remains true to the road car's design but also competitive on the track.

It can take as long as two years for a manufacturer to design, build, and finally introduce a new Stock Car in NASCAR competition. The Mustang has also competed in SCCA Trans-Am, Formula Drift, NHRA, and more.

Ford Performance Motorsports boss Mark Rushbrook is aiming high with his new auto, stating that he "can't wait to see it winning races in the NASCAR Cup Series next year". The manufacture won the 4,000 mile Tour de France Automobile. Ford now runs the Fusion in the NASCAR Cup series, and it has found its way to victory lane nine times.

While a number of NASCAR racers don't have much of a resemblance to their production counterparts, Ford said their design and performance teams worked together to translate the Mustang's "signature style to meet NASCAR rules".

Ford has not won a Cup championship since 2004 when Kurt Busch was victorious for Roush Fenway Racing, but the Fusion could yet end its drought now Stewart-Haas Racing's Kevin Harvick has become one of the "Big Three" dominating the series this year.

The 2019 Mustang for NASCAR competition was unveiled Thursday at the Ford Motor Company World Headquarters. "Our sport eagerly anticipates the performance, style and fanfare the Mustang will bring to the track each weekend beginning at the 2019 Daytona 500". "Ford has over 660 victories, with 9 this year and we look forward to seeing the Mustang add to that", he added. There, the Mustang Xfinity racer has earned a championship every year save for one season. Notably, Ricky Stenhouse Jr won back-to-back driver's championships with the vehicle in 2011 and 2012. Ford just pushed the 10 millionth Mustang off the assembly line.

The new auto will make its debut next February at the Daytona 500. All 13 Ford MENCS drivers are scheduled to be part of the show, along with team owners and NASCAR officials. Stay tuned next week for the reveal of the 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet.
