Jose Mourinho had another dig at Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward after Manchester United opened the season with victory over Leicester.

Martial watched on from the bench, left out of the team after attracting interest from Chelsea, Tottenham and Bayern Munich over the summer.

It wasn't particularly entertaining or engaging, but United got the job done.

In an exclusive interview with MUTV ahead of the Leicester clash, the 28-year-old revealed his and his team-mates' desire to defeat the odds and claim title no. 21 this term. Instead, he brought on Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay.

Chief football writer Daniel Taylor writes: "United's conclusion was that in most cases Mourinho had targeted defenders who were no better than those they already had".

"So I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to these first couple of matches - maybe three matches because after Spurs (and Burnley on August 27 and September 1 respectively) there is (a) national team (break) and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better". After a depleted squad took part in their pre-season tour of the U.S., who will start tonight?

"Leicester were strong in periods but we coped with that as a team".

Nonetheless Mourinho was pleased with his team's display, singling out Pogba and Shaw for particular praise, and the overall spirit.

Summer signing Fred is expected to make his Manchester United debut on Friday but several other players are missing.

"It was not easy to manage the game from the touchline, but I told the players we had good periods, lots of glimpses of the type of football we wanted to play. Forget the name, the history, the shirt, every match is hard". It's the last time I speak about it. It's over, the market is closed.

"I think what Jose Mourinho saw and what all of us saw in the summer was Paul Pogba smashing the middle of the France changing room, calling on the rest of the players, demanding more from them".

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes explained what it would take for Mourinho to stand down as the Red Devils boss at the end of the Premier League season. He made one mistake in 90 minutes, he was very good defensively. "He had a good pre-season".
