Barcelona legend Stoichkov: Argentina would not win for 3 years without Messi

BUENOS AIRES: Captain Lionel Messi will miss Argentina´s next four friendly matches, according to local press reports on Tuesday.

"It would be understandable if Messi doesn't return to the national team", Tevez told TyC Sports.

Boca Juniors last played the Catalan side in 2008, but Messi couldn't take part them because he was at the Olympic Games, even if Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets did play.

Tevez, who earned 76 caps for the national side before his retirement in 2015, now plies his trade back in his native Argentina with Boca Juniors, where he started his professional career back in 2001.

It promises to be an evening of good football and of pre-season festivities.

Barcelona will be hosting their traditional pre-season Joan Gamper Trophy match on Wednesday evening and they've chosen an Argentine opponent. "I was in his spot and the truth is that with so much criticism, sometimes, I didn't want to go".

It further says that Messi's exclusion also raises questions on his future at the club as he has not yet made it clear when he would be making a return to the global team.

Stoichkov also laughed off claims that Messi selects the team. "I think we should all leave him to make his own mind and make the decision that will make him happy".

Hristo Stoichkov, an ex-Barca player and Sundowns boss, feels the team will be far worse off without Messi than with him.

"Argentine football has to have a structure and I don't know about what the new president wants".

"How does Argentina want to play?"

Messi has never won a major worldwide title with Argentina.

After the forgettable tournament, coach Jorge Sampaoli left his role and manager Lionel Scaloni was named to take up the temporary role.
