"You work so hard everyday to provide for us".

Chris Watts faces three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of tampering with a human body, police said.

The mother, who was pregnant, and daughters vanished Monday from their suburban Denver home.

A father accused of killing his family allegedly stuffed his children's bodies into oil and gas tanks to stop the smell. Authorities are expected to file formal charges on Monday. He is being held without bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.

A June 2015 bankruptcy filing captures a picture of a family dealing with financial strain. That was after they bought their house, an asset valued at $400,000, records show. He claimed not to know their whereabouts or what happened to them. The couple reported two savings accounts with a total of $9.51 and a joint checking account with $864.

Frankie Rzucek, who is identified on Shanann Watts' Facebook page as her brother, posted overnight on his page saying he just wanted "to know why".

Frederick Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and CBI joined other agencies in the three-day search for Shanann Watts, and her daughters Bella and Celeste.

In court documents filed by the state, the bodies of two of the victims in Frederick were in an oil well filled with crude oil for four days.

Defense attorneys did not indicate in the court filings what motivated them to make those requests. He also requested that Eikelenboom be present during the autopsies.

It's not clear whether a judge ordered the coroner's officer to swab for DNA.

Bella is remembered by family friends and quiet and very sweet, while Celeste was very outgoing and always up to something. "She seemed pretty happy", he said.

Jeremy says he didn't see something like this from Chris.

Christopher Watts, who is being held without bail, is expected to be formally charged by Monday.

Authorities have not revealed a possible motive or other details in the case.

Chris Watts spoke with 9NEWS less than 24 hours before his arrest in connection to the killing of his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts, and his 2 young daughters.

"We had an emotional conversation, I'll leave it at that", Watts told a reporter who asked whether they'd argued.

The family's two-storey home is just outside Frederick, a small town on the grassy plains north of Denver, where fast-growing subdivisions intermingle with drilling rigs and oil wells. Additional information said that the bodies were found "in close proximity" to where Shanann Watts was found dead earlier Thursday.

But he grew anxious, he said, when one of her friends contacted him around noon and said she wasn't responding to messages.
