The 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet is a limited-edition turnkey race vehicle that honors the 50th anniversary of the original that dominated drag strips in 1968.

Limited to only 68 units in honor of its inaugural year, the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet is said to deliver 8-second quarter-mile e.t.'s at over 150 miles per hour.

Blink, meanwhile, and you might miss it at the drag strip. Ford won't say exactly how much horsepower it's new drag-race special makes, but it says that the auto will run a quarter-mile in the mid-eight-second range.

In fact, Ford's engineers started out with the familiar 5.0-liter V8, but bored it out to 5.2-liters. Besides the increased the increased displacement, the engine has been equipped with a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger.

To handle its as-yet-unannounced but presumably enormous power output, the Cobra Jet also features a 9-inch solid rear axle, four-link rear suspension with anti-roll and panhard bars, two-way coil-over shock absorbers with adjustable ride height, and a low-drag disc brake system.

After its display at Mustang Alley as part of the Woodward Dream Cruise, the 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet will travel the following weekend to Norwalk, Ohio, for the 50th Anniversary Ford Performance Cobra Jet Reunion at Summit Motorsports Park - the largest gathering of Cobra Jets in history. It was created to go very fast in a straight line, with fifty produced and six of which were sent off for NHRA competition.

The original Cobra Jet debuted in NHRA competition in 1968.

Think expensive, track-only cars are a waste of time? Production is limited to 68 cars, in honor of Cobra Jet's 1968 debut.

That's been rectified for this latest model.

Buyers can choose from Oxford White or Race Red colors for the auto with 68 units being produced to celebrate the 1968 year the original Cobra Jet debuted in. Starting at $130,000, they can be optioned with an exclusive 50 Anniversary graphics and badging package. It built 50 that year, just like in 1968, and again in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.
