Paying tribute, Sir Salman Rushdie wrote: "We disagreed all our lives, about politics, about literature, and I feel as sad as if I just lost a beloved older brother".

In 1971, Naipaul became the victor of the Booker prize, and in 2001 received the Nobel prize for literature.

"He was one of the greatest literary talents of the last century, and he was quite a remarkable personality, with insights which I don't think anybody else had - on a personal level, on a broader civilisational level".

He also tried to engage in depression and self-indulgence in student life.

The Port of Spain became the setting for his first novel, Miguel Street, written in 1959.

Naipaul received a knighthood in 1990, and in 2001 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

British author V.S. Naipaul at his home near Salisbury, Wiltshire, October 11, 2001 after it was announced that he has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Throughout his career he was outspoken, notably criticising the famous novel of E M Forster, A Passage To India, and Tony Blair, who he likened to a pirate at the head of a socialist revolution.

Naipaul married Patricia Ann Hale in 1955.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and said, "Sir VS Naipaul will be remembered for his extensive works, which covered diverse subjects ranging from history, culture, colonialism, politics and more".
