Air quality at multiple BC communities at 'very high risk'

Spokane's air quality did reach moderate levels Saturday, but wind has caused more smoke from Canadian wildfires to drift towards the Inland Northwest.

The National Weather Service has issued air quality alerts for much of Washington state. Check the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's website for the most recent conditions.

"We expect the effects of the smoke, in terms of visibility, in terms of the thickness of the smoke obscuring the sky, that's going to be the worst for the next two days", said Jonathan Bau with Environment Canada.

Clearer air is expected to push through southern Manitoba from the north Sunday. Past year saw several days of hazardous air quality in September, with Spokane pinned between wildfires to the north, south and east.

Thick smoke from wildfires raging in British Columbia, Canada, and in the eastern portion of the state started to spread into Western Washington on Sunday.

A high pressure system is keeping the smoke trapped in low-lying areas, including the Tri-Cities, according to the weather service.

Air pollution can be a particular concern to sensitive groups such as the elderly, children and those with respiratory conditions.

Conditions are expected to get worse Sunday night and last through Wednesday.

An air pollution advisory for southern OR remains in effect until further notice.
