It marked the first time the program had been ranked in a preseason poll.

It's the fifth time Alabama has entered the season ranked No. 1 under Coach Nick Saban, though a year ago was the only one of those seasons in which the Tide won the national title. Clemson was ranked No. 2 earning 18 first-place votes, while Georgia, Wisconsin and Ohio State rounded out the top five.

The Crimson Tide now joins Oklahoma (1985-87) as just the second team to start the season No. 1 three years in a row. A team receives 25 points for each first place vote, 24 for second place and so on through to the 25th team, which receives one point, per AP.

OU opens the 2018 season by hosting Florida Atlantic on September 1 at 11 a.m. CT at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

This is Alabama's seventh time overall being a preseason No. 1, matching USC for fourth most.

UCF is ranked in the Top 25 for the first time to the start the season, coming in 21st in the preseason poll.

Central Florida was the only team in the country to go undefeated last season and - you might have heard - the school chose to declare the Knights national champions because why not?

The Crimson Tide has now been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll at least once in the last 11 seasons, the longest such streak in the history of the wire service's rankings. Not surprisingly, all those teams played outside of what were then called BCS automatic qualifying conferences. It was the highest preseason rank since the team opened at No. 6 in 2004.

The Sooners, who have finished in the AP's top five each of the last three seasons, are one of four Big 12 teams in this year's preseason AP poll.
