Taking the stage to share what many assumed would be a heartfelt speech honouring the late Franklin, it really just turned out to be a rambling anecdotal mess about Madonna and her early career.

"There is a connection!"

"None of this would have happened without our lady of soul", Madonna said. "And I know she influenced so many people in this house night".

"A couple of months ago, a lot of people were saying, "You are gambling your career, you are having a baby". but I had the baby and now I still win an award", she told the crowd.

"I love you ty for incredible us with your attractive and powerful speech you're unbelievable", another fan added.

Madonna presents a tribute to Aretha Franklin at the MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, in NY. "R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Long live the queen".

Another said: "I hope the vmas plan to issue a public apology for allowing Madonna to disrespect Aretha Franklin's legacy like that".

Cabello then collected the biggest award of the night for her Havana video with a bow to Madonna, dedicating the trophy to, you guessed it, Madonna.

There was a change of costume and tone - not to mention fake falling snow - as she sang "Jenny From the Block" and was joined by Ja Rule for "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny".

In addition to the VMAs tribute, celebs have been sharing their memories of Franklin following her death last week, and a source told ET on Thursday that her good friend Clive Davis - with the blessing of her family - is planning a tribute concert on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. At Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show on August 16, she unexpectedly performed a heartfelt rendition of Aretha's classic "Natural Woman", the same day the queen passed away.

A few of the star's die-hard fans managed to shine a ray of light on the situation though, including one who called the tribute a "Great speech!" Aretha or Madonna? Definitely Aretha...

"We are like mirror images of each other", she said.

"Love you Madonna, but what was supposed to be a tribute to the "Queen of Soul", you made it all about you".

Following her performance, Lopez, 49, accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and became emotional as she talked about her two children, Max and Emme, and partner Alex Rodriguez. "Very disappointing", one user wrote. "Sorry you didn't get the exact tribute you wanted".
