But by the time Madonna announced the video of the year victor on Monday night's MTV Video Music Awards, the two had been largely relegated to afterthoughts. But apparently, it wasn't supposed to be a tribute at all. She said that later, she had the chance to audition to be a backup singer for a French artist, but forgot to bring sheet music.

The 60-year-old singer took to the stage to present the award for Video of the Year and chose to honour the Queen of Soul in a lengthy speech which barely referenced the late soul legend who passed away last week at the age of 76. "I left Detroit when I was 18", she said. "Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge".

At the ceremony on Monday, Madonna gave a tribute to the Queen of Soul. I said, 'Bitch, I'm Madonna.' No, I didn't, I didn't say that.

"Aretha Louise Franklin changed the course of my life", it began.

Some Franklin fans took to Madonna's own Twitter page to protest the tribute. Nope, she also put on a stellar performance of her greatest hits.

In response, Madonna wrote, "I was asked to present video of the year by MTV!" The answer is nearly certainly no, unless by "iconic music video artist" you mean "artist whose music videos aired on television often enough when I was in high school that I vaguely remember them now".

It was the night's most shocking moment, and MTV seemed to send a message: You're punished for not showing up and rewarded for attending.

"A couple of months ago people were saying, you're gambling your career by having a baby", Cardi B said. Many complained that both Madonna and MTV were disrespectful of Franklin.

"Wha.what is going on here?!?? I'm surprised no other artists mentioned her tonight".

"I love you ty for wonderful us with your handsome and powerful speech you're incredible", another fan added.
