A search for a German pop singer who went overboard from a cruise ship off Newfoundland and Labrador has been called off.

He achieved short-lived fame as a contestant on the national talent show Germany Seeks The Superstar in 2003.

The cruise line stated that 33 year-old Mr. Küblböck allegedly jumped off the German cruise ship around 6 A.M. this morning, according to a tweet the cruise line sent earlier today.

German media are reporting that Daniel Kueblboeck was on an Aida Cruises ship when he went overboard early Sunday near Newfoundland.

The newspaper also reported that Kueblboeck was on a holiday cruise from Hamburg to NY.

Dpa said Kueblboeck's management agency was not immediately available for comment.

Then the AIDAluna turned around and sailed back to where the singer/actor was believed to have gone overboard, about 100 nautical miles from St. John's, the Seatrade Cruise News reported in an online account.

According to a Germany's DPA news agency source, the Canadian coast guard airplanes and helicopters took part in an intensive operation in search of the German singer.

Spokesman Maj. Mark Gough says in an email that given the short survivability time due to the water temperature at this time of year, the hard decision was made to end the search at 11 a.m.
