The plane, known as a "hurricane hunter", flew right into Hurricane Florence Monday as 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate the coast of SC ahead of the storm's arrival.

"Let me be clear: North Carolina is taking Hurricane Florence seriously and you should too", Mr Cooper said at a news conference.

With maximum sustained winds of 130mph Florence is a Category 4 hurricane, but according to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) winds could reach up to 155 miles per hour becoming a Category 5 hurricane before it makes landfall.

Florence catapulted from a Category 2 to a Category 4 hurricane over the span of several hours.

Florence is maintaining its strength and Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches will likely be issued on Tuesday.

South Carolina's governor ordered the state's entire coastline to be evacuated starting at noon on Tuesday.

Florence is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 15 to 20 inches with isolated areas of 30 inches along the current track over portions of North Carolina, Virginia and northern SC through Saturday.

The first hurricane watches were issued for the SC and North Carolina coasts on Tuesday at 5 a.m.

"Florence is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 15 to 20 inches with isolated maxima to 30 inches near Florence's track over portions of North Carolina, Virginia, and northern SC through Saturday".

Life-threatening and catastrophic river and flash flooding is also a near certainty for the Carolinas.

The NWS predicts potential storm surges of up to 3.6m on the coasts along with dangerously large swells and rip currents. It stretches 340 miles across, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The Pentagon said Monday it has sent an advance military team to an emergency operations center in Raleigh, North Carolina, to coordinate with federal and state partners in relief efforts.

The storm is now around 400 miles south of Bermuda and is moving at 16 mph (26 kph).

The North Carolina native urged people to take precautions ahead of the storm.

As Hurricane Florence barrels toward the Carolina coast, experts are warning of its potentially disastrous effects.

"All you have to do is look up at your ceiling and think about 12ft of water - that, folks, is extremely life-threatening".

President Donald Trump on Monday night declared an emergency in North Carolina. "However, if the storm does stall, it could drop 10-20" of rain, leading to flooding well inland.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said an estimated 1 million people would be fleeing his state's coast, with eastbound Interstate 26 heading into Charleston and USA 501 heading into Myrtle Beach reversed to ease the exodus.
