Nine people were killed after a driver rammed his auto into a crowd in the southeastern China city of Hengyang late Wednesday, according to the local government.

The red SUV drove into Binjiang square in Hengyang city, Hunan province, at 19:40 local time (11:40 GMT).

Video images carried on state media showed several bodies on the ground as bystanders tended to some of them.

The driver deliberately rammed his auto into pedestrians on the Mijiang Square, said the statement posted by the Hengyang government on the official social media account.

Three people have been so far been declared dead and 43 injured but the death toll is expected to grow, with some local newspapers already speaking of nine victims.

Police have detained the driver of the auto, who they say had a criminal record, according to the local government.

Police have reportedly named the suspect as a 54-year-old man, Yang Zanyun.

Officials have not said whether the incident is terror related.
