The vessels would get underway from Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek to avoid potential damage from winds and tidal surges, said Colonel Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman.

Electricity was out for weeks, and the National Guard was called in to help with the cleanup.

President Trump said the safety of the American people is his "absolute highest priority" as Hurricane Florence takes aim at portions of the East Coast. It was a potentially catastrophic Category 4 storm but was expected to keep drawing energy from the warm water and intensify to near Category 5, which means winds of 157 miles per hour (253 kph) or higher. With the ground already saturated and unable to absorb extra moisture, there's nowhere else the water can go but upward and further inland. Rainfall could be as much as 40 inches locally along the North Carolina coast.

Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that his government is "absolutely, totally prepared" for Hurricane Florence, even as officials and forecasters warned that the "staggering" storm is shaping up to be catastrophic and unprecedented. Life-threatening storm surges of up to a staggering 13 feet in some places were also forecast.

Hurricane warnings have been issued by the U.S. National Hurricane Center for portions of SC and North Carolina due to Hurricane Florence, according to the agency's 5 p.m. update on September 11, 2018.

Kerry Emanuel, an expert on hurricanes and climate change at MIT, said in an email that the research "may prove a game-changer in climate-hurricane studies".

Florence could be the strongest hurricane to hit the Carolinas since Hugo in 1989.

The center of the storm is expected to move between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and will approach the Carolinas by Thursday.
