Sources told ESPN FC that United made a £50 million bid for Alderweireld, £20m less than Tottenham wanted, and negotiations over the Belgium global continued until the Premier League transfer deadline on August 9.

And since then the 29-year-old has committed himself to Tottenham.

'This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me.

The centre-back was quoted as saying by Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad: "That is a victory for me".

"At first I struggled to get my place in the team back but being in the first team again is a big positive for me". Regarding my future, everything that was said in the press was not right all the time.' Alderweireld has less than a year remaining on his current contract, with an option for a one-year extension that includes a £25million release clause.

Talks between Tottenham and Alderweireld over a new deal broke down last year as Spurs felt that the defender was asking for too much money and he is now in the final year of his contract with the club.

Now I am just trying to help Tottenham to the best of my ability.

The Belgian has started all of Spurs' last three games, despite only making 14 appearances for the club in the league last term.

Nicol says Alderweireld's comments are good news for Tottenham supporters.

"But from everything that Alderweireld's saying, he's sending messages that he wants to stay".

Alderweireld and Tottenham are back in Premier League action this Saturday when they welcome Liverpool to Wembley.
