Marcus Rashford ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo Harry Kane at same age - Southgate

England boss Gareth Southgate has compared Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford to Cristiano Ronaldo and suggested the Englishman is further ahead at his age, leading to an uproar among some United fans.

Rashford will serve the first game of a three-match suspension this weekend following his red card against Burnley before the worldwide break, further restricting his opportunity to build on his part in England's run to the semifinals of the World Cup in Russian Federation, where he made six appearances.

And Sutton believes the United youth product, who burst onto the scene in 2016, should leave Old Trafford and find somewhere where he is the main man. But he has struggled to hold down a starting place due to the competition caused by the emergence of Jesse Lingard and the arrivals of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

"He's a huge admirer of him, but he's got his job to do".

The England manager hopes that the intensification of the domestic season, with some clubs competing on three fronts as Europe fully kicks in next week, will mean that they get opportunities.

Gareth Southgate has warned his England players that it will be hard to pick them for next month's Nations League games in Croatia and Spain if they are not playing regularly for their clubs.

"Jose thinks the world of Marcus", he said.

"They understand it is hard to pick players if we are seven, eight weeks into the season and they are not playing", Southgate said.

"I was at Manchester City against Huddersfield and you think: 'Well, OK, it is a game where Foden will play.' But actually, if I am Pep, I have other players, senior players, who I have to get up to speed because they haven't had many match minutes". They have to try to win matches.

"The most important thing of all is that the kid is a good kid, a good player, knows what Manchester United did for him, starting in the academy, then Mr Van Gaal's support, my support, the club's support, a new contract, new shirt, and selected for every single match".

"It's not my business to interfere with club managers".

"I was delighted [with Rashford] because we really wanted to make him feel important over this period", Southgate said. "He's got huge competition for places at his club, so you can understand (his frustration)". They have to rotate their squads.

A move to another club could provide more playing time but sticking at United will help him win silverware.
