A member of the United States Coast Guard was removed from the Hurricane Florence response team on Friday after he surreptitiously flashed a hand signal for "white power" on live T.V. "Well, no, it hasn't, but you are likely to hear just the opposite from social media, thanks to the latest hoax from members of notorious website 4chan", read a post from the anti-racism group. In a statement, the agency said the incident was a "frustrating distraction" amid the unsafe hurricane that is poised to affect more than 10 million people this week in the Southeast. Others were offended because they connect the gesture to President Donald Trump and conservatives.

The unidentified team member made the "offensive" "OK" hand gesture while looking into the camera during a live broadcast with Sector Charleston Commanding Officer Captain John Reed on MSNBC.

The hand gesture made in the segment has typically been known to mean "OK", but recently, members of the alt-right have started a trolling campaign to appropriate the sign in a trolling campaign - a move they also pulled with the online comic character Pepe the Frog - to trigger liberals and members of the media.

The agency immediately responded to the outcry and distanced from the controversy.

The incident quickly sparked outrage on Twitter, prompting the Coast Guard to issue a statement confirming that it was aware of the incident.

The statement came after a hurricane response worker was seen in the background of a televised Coast Guard briefing on Friday evening flashing what some viewers saw as a white power sign. This person has been removed from the response pending an investigation.

Coast Guard officials wouldn't identify the man and declined to discuss possible disciplinary action.

The Anti-Defamation League previously noted that the "OK" gesture isn't a hate symbol. Seems it all started on a February 28 thread on 4chan's /pol/ board, where commenters invented the notion that the thumb-finger circle sign means white power, Buzzfeed reported in April. It also can carry a vulgar connotation in some overseas cultures.

In other circles, the hand signal is viewed as an occult representation of 666 or the Antichrist.
