United announced they were re-forming their women's team six months ago after 13 years and their first match was a 1-0 win over rivals Liverpool, a result that immediately increased expectations going into their first season.

Managed by former England worldwide, Casey Stoney, United had scored six goals after just 35 minutes, with Lauren James netting twice and Sigsworth scoring a hat-trick.

Jess Sigworth ran riot as she scored five goals, while Lauren James and Kirsty Hanson grabbed doubles in the rout.

Next up for United is a home clash against Sheffield United Women in the Championship.

Things didn't get much better for the Villains in the second half, as Sigsworth added two more along with goals from the likes of Katei Zelem, who spent her youth at United's girls academy, Ella Toone and Mollie Green.

In the Super League, Liverpool Women lost 5-0 to Arsenal, Manchester City Women were held to a goalless draw at Chelsea, while Everton Ladies lost 1-0 to Birmingham.

They will also take on London Bees Ladies and Durham Women's FC to round off their September fixture list.
