The station reported that the boy is named Kaiden Lee-Welch.

Authorities are searching for a 1-year-old boy who was swept away by Florence's floodwaters in Union County, North Carolina, after the boy's mother lost her grip on him.

"Her vehicle left the roadway and came to rest amongst a group of trees", sheriff's officials said.

Dazia Lee lost her grip on her son, Kaiden Lee-Welch, when she tried to escape on foot after her auto was washed off the road into trees near New Salem in North Carolina.

Numerous search crews and swift water rescue teams are working to find Kaiden, police said.

It happened Sunday night in the 7800 block of Highway 218.

When the auto came to a stop on the side of the road after it was swept, the woman freed her child from the vehicle seat. But the waters were deep, and Underwood said the woman lost her grip and her son was swept away.

Lee was driving on NC 218 and became barricaded and trapped in rushing floodwaters.

Officials say that at least 17 people died in Florence-related incidents.

"I couldn't hold on anymore, and he let go", Kaiden's mother, Dazia Lee, told FOX 46.
