The British cave diver who helped save a trapped Thai soccer team has sued volatile Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk for inexplicably calling him a "child rapist" and "pedo guy".

The case is Unsworth v. Musk, 18-CV-08048, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles).

Mr Musk called the Brit "pedo guy" in a tweet to his 22.5 million followers after Mr Unsworth criticised him in a TV interview with CNN about the rescue.

Unsworth had called Musk's offer to build a "tube" to help rescue the children a "PR stunt", and said Musk manufactured the pedophile allegation "out of whole cloth" simply because he disagreed with that assessment.

Unsworth was publicly critical of Musk's attempts to involve himself in the rescue using a purpose-built miniature submarine, which Unsworth described as having "absolutely no chance of working".

Later on September 4, however, Musk accused Unsworth of moving to Thailand to be with a bride who was about 12 years old.

Despite his apology, Musk returned to the topic on August 28, when he tweeted: "You don't think it's odd [Unsworth] hasn't sued me?"

In a series of tweets on July 15, Musk, who personally delivered the submarine to the cave, wrote that he never saw Unsworth and challenged him to show a video of the final rescue.

The British diver who masterminded the Thai cave rescue is suing Elon Musk over comments alleging that he is a paedophile.

The boys, aged 11-16, were reached on July 2 by Volanthen and Stanton, according to the lawsuit.

Mr Unsworth's lawyers said these accusations are false and have been proved so by comments from other rescuers in the media.

"Musk's influence and wealth can not convert his lies into truth or protect him from accountability for his wrongdoing in a court of law", Mr Unsworth's United States attorney, L Lin Wood, said.

Unsworth is seeking unspecified damages "for the worldwide damage he has suffered to his reputation", according to the lawsuit, which noted that a separate complaint was being readied in the High Court of London.

The billionaire also said he hoped Mr Unsworth would sue him.
