Chuck Grassley: Kavanaugh accuser has not yet agreed to testify

The full power of the White House is behind Kavanaugh, Hirono said, which puts Ford at a disadvantage and victimizes her: "Haven't we been here before with the Clarence Thomas hearings?"

President Donald Trump echoed McConnell's critique during a joint press conference with President Duda of Poland Tuesday afternoon. "I hope Republican Voters, and others, are watching and studying, the Democrats Playbook".

Hill also expressed concern about Ford testifying before Congress on Monday, as it could be "a sham proceeding so that the senators can say we gave her a chance to talk and then move on to doing exactly what they were intending to do before she came forward".

"Why didn't senator Feinstein bring this up at her meeting with judge Kavanaugh?" he said.

How the Republicans and Democrats reacted to the allegations?

Feinstein said. "What about individuals who were previously told about this incident?" He called the allegations a "drive-by attack" on the judge's character.

Warren's willingness to co-opt others' misfortunes for her own benefit knows no limit. In fact, she wound up having plenty more to say, specifically about her party's long-term plans for filling a vacant seat on the Supreme Court.

Mike Braun, a former IN state legislator running against Donnelly, also criticised the timing and praised Kavanaugh.

Sarah Adler, a former student of Ford's who is now a clinical psychologist at Stanford, co-organized a letter in support of her former professor that had been signed by more than 300 colleagues and former students by Tuesday afternoon.

Democrats complain that Ms Ford was not consulted before the hearing was announced.

Under pressure from a bipartisan group of senators, GOP leaders delayed a judiciary committee vote on the the nomination, originally scheduled for Thursday, in order to allow for a hearing on the assault allegations. She says Kavanaugh groped her over her clothes, grinded his body against hers and tried to take off her one-piece swimsuit and the outfit she wore over it. Kavanaugh covered her mouth with his hand when she tried to scream, she says, and she escaped when the friend, Mark Judge, jumped on them.

The Senate's No. 2 Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, raised doubts about Ford's account of the alleged three-decade-old incident, saying, "The problem is Dr. Ford can't remember when it was, where it was, or how it came to be". "A proper investigation must be completed, witnesses interviewed, evidence reviewed and all sides spoken to". Republicans hold a majority of 51:49 in the Senate.

"We've offered Dr. Ford the opportunity to share her story with the committee, as her attorney said yesterday she was willing to do".

Republicans have charged Democrats with attempting to stymie the confirmation until after the November midterm elections, and with weaponizing Ford's allegation to achieve that political end. Democrats are now favoured to take the House while becoming increasingly confident of adding the two Senate seats that would give them control of that chamber.
